I'm Kaz - you might have seen me around the neighborhood with my gardening belt and cart and wondered how I ended up here.
The first Flower Castle was a child of circumstance - the sidewalk plot on Waller St near Cafe du Soleil had a huge tree stump in it that kept anything else from being planted, but I thought if I built a raised planter on top of it, I could still grow plants, and keep this big sunny spot from going to waste.
I learned a lot from that first project - but more than anything, I learned that you CAN have a successful garden in a public space, and people WILL (mostly!) respect it. Some will change their walking route to go by it each day. Many will stop to take pictures.
I also met lots of neighbors who had struggled to maintain a sidewalk garden - dogs, trash, weeds, and bad soil had stymied their efforts. Building raised planters solved all of these problems at once. So, I agreed to build a second. And a third....
There are now ten Flower Castles dotted around the Lower Haight and Duboce Triangle - each custom designed and built for its location, each a labor of love.
